Remembering Modesta Maxine Anyango: A brilliant star taken too Soon

The Ugandan sports community stands united in grief following the tragic and untimely passing of Modesta Maxine Anyango. A phenomenal athlete, a fierce competitor, and a beloved teammate, Maxine left us on May 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of passion, resilience, and basketball excellence that will never be forgotten. At just 18 years old, she had already carved her name into the history books of African basketball, inspiring a generation of young women across the continent.

A phenomenal ascent to the continental stage

Born on December 17, 2007, in Kampala, Uganda, Maxine discovered her passion for basketball at a young age. Standing 175 cm (5’9″) tall, her natural athleticism, quick footwork, and exceptional court vision made her an immediate standout. As a student at St. Noa Girls Secondary School Zana, she balanced her rigorous academic pursuits with intensive athletic training, quickly emerging as the crown jewel of her school’s basketball program. Her stellar performances in school championships caught the attention of national selectors, sparking a rapid rise through the ranks of Ugandan basketball.

Flag bearer for the Nation: Her Basketball Milestones

Maxine was a vital asset to the national youth teams, widely known as the Junior Gazelles. Over a short but incredibly impactful career, she represented Uganda with immense pride across several major continental tournaments:

FIBA U16 Africa Championship (2023): Maxine made her presence felt on the international circuit in Monastir, Tunisia, proving she could compete against the continent’s elite youth players.

FIBA 3×3 U17 Africa Cup (2023): Displaying incredible versatility, she excelled in the fast-paced 3×3 format, famously helping Uganda dominate tough opponents on the court.

FIBA Zone V U18 African Qualifiers (2024): This tournament solidified her status as a superstar. She put on a masterclass performance, notably anchoring the team during a resounding 103-48 blowout victory against Tanzania. Her exceptional play earned her the prestigious tournament MVP honors.

FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket (2024): In South Africa, Maxine’s brilliance helped guide the Junior Gazelles to a historic fourth-place finish, cementing Uganda’s reputation as a rising powerhouse in African women’s basketball.

The Senior Transition

Her rapid trajectory was so profound that in February 2025, at just 17 years old, she was selected for the final senior women’s national team (the Gazelles). She traveled to Cairo, Egypt, for the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone 5 Qualifiers, earning valuable minutes on the senior floor and helping Uganda triumph in Cairo.

A Legacy of Light and Resilience

Beyond the accolades, the statistics, and the MVP trophies, Maxine was celebrated for her character. Teammates and coaches remember her as a vibrant presence who brought joy into every locker room. She was a leader who led by example, showing passion when the team was down and humility when they were victorious. Maxine wore the Ugandan jersey not just as a uniform, but as a badge of honor, capturing the hearts of fans every time she stepped onto the hardwood.

Teammate’s Tribute:

No one understood Maxine’s drive, heart, and spirit better than those who shared the court with her. Her close friend and teammate, Tracy Namugosa, shared a deeply moving reflection on the void Maxine leaves behind, painting a portrait of a player who was as fiercely competitive as she was profoundly kind. On the court, she hated losing; she had a fierce hunger for winning, and that competitive fire was contagious. But off the court, she was the kindest, most loving soul you could ever meet. — “Tracy Namugosa”, Teammate.

Farewell Eulogy: Rest in Power, Champ

To our beloved Maxine, It is hard to speak of you in the past tense when your spirit was so undeniably vibrant, so fiercely alive. You moved across the basketball court with grace, a young woman on a mission, carrying the dreams of a nation on your shoulders. Every bounce of the ball, every relentless drive to the basket, and every celebratory smile showed us a glimpse of greatness in the making.

You were taken from us far too soon, before the world could witness the full expansion of your wings. Yet, the time you spent here was not in vain. You showed every little girl in Kampala, and across Uganda, that with a ball and a dream, you can command the attention of an entire continent. You left it all on the court, leaving a blueprint of excellence for every Gazelle who will wear the national jersey after you.

To your family, your friends, your classmates at St. Noa, and your basketball family, we extend our deepest comfort. We cannot erase the void left by your departure, but we promise to protect the flame you ignited. The court is quiet now, Maxine. The final buzzer has sounded on your earthly journey, but your story does not end here. Your legacy is etched into the hardwood of Kampala, the arenas of Kenya and Tanzania, and the hearts of everyone who ever watched you play. You came, you conquered, and you inspired. Fly high, Champ. Rest in eternal peace, Modesta Maxine Anyango. You will remain our MVP forever 🕊️.
