The Boston Celtics secured a historic 18th NBA championship by defeating the Dallas Mavericks 106-88, wrapping up a 4-1 series victory in the NBA Finals. The triumph, witnessed by an elated home crowd at TD Garden, marks the Celtics’ first title win in 16 years, pushing them ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers, who have 17 championships.
Despite a resounding 122-84 victory by Dallas on Friday to avoid a sweep, the Celtics came out strong in Game 5. Boston’s top-seeded team, inspired by Jayson Tatum’s 31-point performance, established an early dominance. Tatum commented, “We wanted to finish it at home, in front of our fans. It was a special night.”

Dallas’ star, Kyrie Irving, who previously played for Boston until 2019, had a particularly tough night. Irving, heckled by the crowd, managed only 15 points. By halftime, the Celtics led 67-46, with Irving and Luka Doncic combining for just 14 points in the first quarter. Dallas attempted a comeback late in the third quarter but couldn’t overcome Boston’s formidable defense, which maintained a 19-point lead going into the final quarter.
Jaylen Brown, who delivered a stellar defensive performance against Luka Doncic, was named NBA Finals MVP. Brown averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists across the five Finals games. Accepting the MVP trophy, named in honor of Celtics legend Bill Russell, Brown expressed his gratitude: “It was a full team effort. I share this with my brothers and my partner in crime Jayson Tatum – he was with me the whole way, so we share this together.”

Reflecting on the journey and his faith in the team, Brown, who signed a five-year extension worth $286 million last year, said, “I never hung my head. We believed in ourselves, and now we’re champions again.”
The Celtics’ robust start to the game and unwavering defense were key to their victory, preventing Dallas from finding any consistent rhythm. This championship win solidifies Boston’s position as the most successful franchise in NBA history, with fans and players alike celebrating a monumental achievement.
