African Games: Debutant Tumusiime scoops Uganda first Boxing medal
Innocent Tumusiime, a Ugandan boxer, secured Uganda’s inaugural medal at the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana.
Tumusiime triumphed over Lesotho’s Retselistsoe Kolobe in the Light flyweight bout’s opening round at Boukum Boxing Arena on Sunday, guaranteeing himself a medal spot.
He is set to face Congolese boxer Tukembekwa Zola in the semifinals. Another Ugandan, Innocent Amoko, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Seychelles’ Jovanie Darius Antoine in the opening round.
Amoko is slated to compete against Gebremariam Abrahm Alem of Ethiopia for a spot in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Muzamir Semuddu, captain of the Bombers, will resume his matches today, facing off against Ghana’s Henry Malmy.
Kasim Murungi will also compete against Abdul Wahid of Ghana, who received a bye in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Uganda has accumulated a total of nine medals so far, comprising two golds, three silvers, three bronzes, and Tumusiime’s yet-to-be-identified medal.
