Monday – Ashraf Mandela thanked medical staff and his teammates after a concussion on the pitch during their 1-0 win over Arua Hill SC on Wednesday 16 November at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The 23 – year-old collapsed after a collision with Arua Hill SC forward Kawawa Rashid prompting his teammates to immediately sprint to his aid and medics to rush onto the pitch.

The right-back was eventually stretchered off the pitch and rushed to hospital where his condition was been described as stable.

In a statement via Vipers SC website, Mandela said: “I would like to thank my teammate Alfred Mudekereza for the quick and fast response to save my life, along with all doctors and paramedics from LifeLink hospital, Vipers SC Doctor and Arua Hill SC Doctor who rushed to help treat and stabilize me when l suffered a concussion.”

“Without all of you, l know things would’ve been much worse and I’m sincerely grateful. I won’t be back next game, but l will be back and l look forward to being back on the pitch playing the game l love alongside my teammates infront of our great fans.”

After the game, teammates, friends and other clubs all joined in to wish the player a speedy recovery.

Vipers SC later released a press statement of just how quick and swift the incident was was handled.

“Vipers Sports Club is grateful to report that defender Ashraf Mandela has been discharged from hospital and will return home today (Wednesday).

“He was conscious when he was rushed to Namulundu hospital after colliding with the Arua Hill SC forward Rashid Kawawa in a match yesterday played at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

“After comprehensive medical examinations and staying in hospital overnight for observation, he has been allowed home, where our medical staff will continue to monitor him closely.”
