The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 will take place between 1st – 28th February 2025, hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This announcement was made following an Executive Committee meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday.
The decision to host the tournament across three East African nations marks a historic collaboration between the countries, with matches set to be played in the cities of Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam. The tournament will bring together some of the best home-based talent from across Africa, showcasing the vibrancy of football in the region.
This will be the third time the CECAFA region (Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations) hosts the prestigious CHAN tournament. Previously, Sudan hosted in 2011, followed by Rwanda in 2016. The return of the tournament to East Africa is expected to elevate the profile of the sport in the region and provide a thrilling football spectacle for fans.
In the last edition, Senegal claimed the crown after a dramatic final against Algeria, winning 5-4 on penalties after a tense goalless draw. As reigning champions, they will be looking to defend their title in the upcoming edition.
Notably, DR Congo won the inaugural tournament in 2009 in Ivory Coast and again in 2016.
The 2025 edition presents a golden opportunity for East African teams to challenge for the title on home soil, potentially adding the first CECAFA nation to the list of CHAN champions.
Will another CECAFA nation rise to glory this time? Only time will tell as the countdown to CHAN 2025 begins!
