Greater Arua Schools Rugby 7s Tournament Set to Kick Off

Excitement is building in Arua as the much-anticipated Greater Arua Schools Rugby 7s Tournament is set to commence on Friday, June 14, 2024. This thrilling three-week event, which also serves as a qualifier for the National Ball Games 2, promises to showcase some of the region’s best young rugby talent.

The tournament, organized by the Nile Leopards Rugby Club in collaboration with the Uganda Rugby Union, is part of a strategic initiative to foster the growth and development of rugby in Arua City and West Nile at large.

According to Asiku Denis, the President of Nile Leopards Rugby Club, this initiative began in the first term with the distribution of rugby balls to several pilot schools, followed by a comprehensive training session for teachers on the World Rugby Union’s Get Into Rugby course. This foundational course, held on April 19, 2024, at Coco Palm Gardens in Arua City, was conducted by World Rugby Union educators, who are also staff members of the Uganda Rugby Union.

The competition will span three circuits, each taking place on a Friday: June 14th, June 21st, and concluding on June 28th, 2024. Each circuit will be a day-long event filled with high-energy matches and spirited competition. The participating schools have been receiving ongoing support and training from the Nile Leopards Rugby Club and the Uganda Rugby Union to ensure they are well-prepared for the tournament.

This initiative underscores the commitment of both the Nile Leopards Rugby Club and the Uganda Rugby Union to nurture future rugby stars and elevate the sport’s profile in the region.
