Uganda ‘s Kawempe Muslim (Girls) Scoops Bronze as Tanzania, South Africa shine at the Caf African Schools Football Tournament.
A packed Amaan Stadium witnessed a historic moment at the 2nd edition of the CAF African Schools Football Championship in Zanzibar as hosts Tanzania clinched the boys’ category title, defeating Guinea 1-0 to be crowned Continental champions in front of their home supporters , exhibiting their prowess having won the girls category last year.
In the girls’ category, South Africa emerged as champions with a 1-1 (5-4) victory over Morocco, for a powerful statement having lost to guinea in the finals last year in the boys category.
The CAF African Schools Football Championship is an annual competition for school football clubs in Africa, launched in 2022 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Its looks at developing organized football at the school level for both boys and girls across the continent.
Uganda was represented by two schools, St Mary Kitende SS for the boys and Kawempe Muslim Ss for the girls category. St Mary’s Kitende didn’t make it out of their group A after losing to Tanzania and a draw against Senegal in their group games.
On the other hand , Kawempe Muslim from the girls side topped group B with 7 points from two wins against Gambia and Togo and a draw with later champions South Africa.
For their remarkable debut performance, Uganda’s representatives Kawempe Muslims grabbed a second half goal through Cynthia Kirenga’s finish for a 1-0 Victory against host Tanzania to scoop a bronze medal and a $150,000 in prize money, to seal out their impressive performance throughout the tournament.
Uganda’s Shadia Nabirye (Kawempe Muslims SS) was also named the championship’s top scorer, netting three goals in five matches.
