West Nile Health Forum Launches Inaugural Health Run in Arua City to Combat Maternal Mortality
Arua City is set to host the inaugural West Nile Health Run on Sunday, 29 September 2024, aimed at raising awareness about the region’s alarming maternal and infant mortality rates. Organized by the West Nile Health Forum, a membership-based organization uniting health practitioners across the region, the run will rally support for a healthier West Nile.
Dr. Edema Fred, Chairperson of the West Nile Health Forum, stressed the gravity of the health crisis in the region. “Every week, we’re losing 2-5 mothers during childbirth. In Uganda, out of every 1,000 mothers giving birth, 36 do not survive,” he stated, highlighting the recent losses of three mothers in Angal, Nebbi.

The latest Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) report for 2022 reveals that the infant mortality rate in the West Nile region is 54.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, the highest in the country. Following closely are the Ankole and Bunyoro sub-regions with rates of 49.0 and 42.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, respectively, prompting the launch of a new project called Mama Care. This initiative includes a toll-free line, chatbot services, and mobile clinics designed to support expectant mothers and reduce maternal mortality.
“We recognize that the Ministry of Health and other players are addressing these issues, but they cannot do it alone. The West Nile Health Run is part of a collective effort to make a real difference,” Dr. Edema added.
Jessica Rizuyo, Administrator for West Nile Health Forum, acknowledged the support of sponsors, including KIWIBET, Buricare, MBN Lab, Post Bank, Med-Optics, and Arua One FM. “When we initiated the idea of this run, we were overwhelmed by the positive response from our sponsors and the community. We’re uniting for health and encouraging everyone to participate.”

Asianzy Sophie, the reigning Miss Tourism Sports Queen, also lent her voice to the cause, urging men and women alike to take part in the run. “Many women face immense challenges during pregnancy and childbirth. This is a chance to run for your mother, sister, or friend, and to raise awareness about the need for better equipment in our health facilities.”
The West Nile Health Run aims to foster community engagement and generate much-needed resources to tackle the region’s healthcare challenges, especially maternal and infant mortality. All are encouraged to join the run and contribute to a healthier future for West Nile.
