DR Congo struggled to contain Mali’s ball movement and shooting, with the Malians repeatedly finding open looks from beyond the arc and punishing defensive lapses. The gap continued to grow after the break as Mali entered the final quarter with a commanding 79-61 advantage before closing out the game with a 25-point fourth quarter.

Kassim Siriman led Mali’s balanced offensive attack with 15 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Mamadou Diarra and David Fadiala Diarra added 13 and 12 points respectively, while Mahamane Coulibaly finished with 10. Mali had contributions throughout the roster, with their bench producing an impressive 51 points compared with just 25 from DR Congo.

Mali’s efficiency was the biggest difference between the two sides. They shot 50.7% from the field and an outstanding 63.6% from two-point range, while also converting 18 of 23 free throws (78.3%). They also moved the ball effectively, recording 27 assists, and dominated the fast-break battle 25-14. DR Congo, meanwhile, shot just 37.8% overall and struggled from three-point range, making 9 of 36 attempts.

DR Congo’s best individual performance came from Damion Baugh, who led all scorers with 19 points. Patrick Mwamba added 15 points, while Noah Toto Cuma contributed 14. Shekinah Munanga also finished in double figures with 15 points, but DR Congo could not match Mali’s depth or offensive efficiency. The Malian defence also made life difficult for DR Congo throughout the contest. Mali forced 13 turnovers and turned them into 25 points, while scoring 48 points in the paint and 25 on the fast break. DR Congo did have an advantage in second-chance points, scoring 18 compared with Mali’s seven, but it was not enough to offset Mali’s dominance in the other areas.

The victory keeps Mali firmly in the race for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, with Africa set to have five representatives at the tournament in Qatar. For DR Congo, the defeat leaves them with little room for error as they look to keep their qualification hopes alive in the remaining games.

DAKAR,
