As the men\u2019s Nile Special Rugby Premier League is slowly taking shape, there is a lot more rugby that is happening across the women\u2019s and men\u2019s game in the central region of Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the women\u2019s central main rugby league, 4 teams have signed up, with Makerere based Ewes Rugby joining the main frame. In the men\u2019s central reserve league, 8 teams are currently participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is The Central Reserve League?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The top flight of Ugandan rugby is comprised of 10 teams, with each expected to field a development side in the reserve league. Of the 10 teams, 8 are located in the central region, with Jinja Hippos and Walukuba Barbarians coming from the eastern part of the country. This leaves the central league with 8 teams that are now going into game week 3 of the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intention of the reserve league is to give fringe players, players returning from injury and junior players a chance to grow their rugby while knocking on the doors of the main stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reserve sides include; Stallions (Heathens), Bisons (Buffaloes), Sailors (Black Pirates), Boks (KOBs), iNtangas (Impis), Rams 2 (Rams), Kifaru (Rhinos) and Jjengo (Mongers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Women’s Central Rugby League<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The women\u2019s central league also returned and they are going into Game Week 2. Current Uganda Cup title holders, The Avengers, shall be out to continue their good form at home to the Black Pearls where as the other traditional side in The Thunderbirds shall face new comers, The Ewes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local women\u2019s league is important because it\u2019s the pool from which the National 15s and 7s teams are selected. Similar leagues are held in the other regions of the country as well, with teams from as far as Lira, Kabale and Mbale. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why These Leagues Are Important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whereas the spotlight shines brightest on the men\u2019s senior Nile Special Rugby Premier League, it is important to follow these leagues as well. It is from such leagues that the stars of tomorrow arise for the clubs and national teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is still a logistical nightmare to hold nationwide competitions at this level, but we have to start somewhere. Combined with the other regional competitions, this provides a platform for everyone involved in rugby to play their part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
