Former Man United captain retires from football<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ecuadorian spent nine years at old Trafford playing against some of the greatest players to have ever graced the English Premier League like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winger was signed by legendary Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson to fill the void left by Cristiano Rinaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also played under David Moyes, Luis Van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho who eventually turned him into a right-back before leaving the club under Solskjaer’s reign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After progressing through the youth system at\u00a0El Nacional<\/a>, Valencia became a first team regular and made over 80 appearances for the club. He won the\u00a0Ecuadorian Serie A<\/a>\u00a0with them before signing for\u00a0La Liga<\/a>\u00a0side\u00a0Villarreal<\/a> in 2005. He only made two league appearances for the Spanish side in between loan spells at\u00a0Recreativo<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a02005\u201306 season<\/a>\u00a0and later English\u00a0Premier League<\/a>\u00a0club\u00a0Wigan Athletic<\/a>\u00a0from 2006 to 2008. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wigan Athletic later signed Valencia on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee in January 2008. His performances for Wigan Athletic soon attracted attention from several high-profile clubs, eventually signing for\u00a0Manchester United<\/a>\u00a0in June 2009. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valencia was voted into the\u00a0PFA Team of the Year<\/a>\u00a0in his\u00a0debut season<\/a> with the club, and he went on to win two Premier League titles, an\u00a0FA Cup<\/a>, two\u00a0League Cups<\/a>, three\u00a0FA Community Shields<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0UEFA Europa League<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2019 Valencia returned to Ecuador, signing with\u00a0LDU Quito<\/a>, with whom he won the inaugural\u00a0Copa Ecuador<\/a>\u00a0in his first season. He announced his retirement in May 2021

Valencia made his Ecuador debut in 2004 and has represented his country at the\u00a02006 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, the\u00a02007 Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/a>, the\u00a02011 Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/a>, the\u00a02014 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, the\u00a0Copa Am\u00e9rica Centenario<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a02019 Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
