The National Rugby 7s Season Returns With Seven Circuits Across Six Districts.
2 min readEvery Rugby fan in Uganda can agree that the wait for some local competitive rugby action has been a little too long, but not anymore.
After a no show by The Kenya Simbas for the 2022 edition of the Elgon Cup, and a late cancellation of the Victoria Cup by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, Uganda rugby fans felt slapped in the face by old allies in the development of rugby in the region.
After an entertaining outing by the Uganda Rugby Sevens team at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, fans on the local scene are gassed up for an exciting Rugby 7s season that is going to start on the 6th and 7th of August and run up to the 15th and 16th of October, over 11 weeks in six different districts across the country.
At the launch of the Rugby 7s season held yesterday at the Kings Park Arena, that will play host to two circuits this year, Mr. John Paul Ssemakula, the Nile Breweries connections manager assured Ugandans of a great showpiece.
In his words, he said “the 7s have that carnival feel to them that as a brand we shall seek to tap into to give fans a memorable #Rugby7sUnmatched series.”
The Uganda Rugby Union was well represent by the Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Ramsey Olinga and Tournaments Manager, Mr. Robert Bwali who promised an exciting season ahead.
This all happened in the presence of club representatives, media and other stakeholders.
There is also some good news for women’s rugby. This year their Rugby 7s season will run jointly with the men’s at the same venues.
From Arua to Wakiso, Kampala to Fort Portal, fans should expect exhilarating runs, big hits, cheeky sidesteps on the turf and of course good vibes off it.
The weekend encounters shall open with the Buffaloes taking on the Rhinos at 8am while defending 7s champions Kobs will open their title defence against Entebbe outfit, Jaguars.
Other mouthwatering fixtures will include Pirates Vs. Sailors, Heathens Vs. Rams and Impis Vs. Walukuba.
