CHAN: Algeria book semi-final slot
Saturday – Algeria booked a place in the semi-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2022) after cruising to a 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast on Friday evening.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in stoppage time and Aimen Mahious made sure the North Africans made it to the last four.
Algeria started the game quite well, creating numerous opportunities in the opening 15 minutes.
The host’s first serious threat was as a header by Zakaria Draoui whose header hit the Ivorian’s goal post after a perfect cross from Ayoub Abdellaoui from the left.
Algeria goalkeeper, Alexis Guendouz was shown a straight red card after VAR review showed his infringement on Ivorian player.
Ivorian defender, Kouassi Attohoula was later shown a red card for stamping on an Algerian opponent. With both teams less by a player, Algeria continued to dominate proceedings but failed to find the back for the net.
With the game approaching extra time, the referee awarded a penalty to Algeria after Ivory Coast player fouled his opponent. Mahious stepped forward and converted from the spot to send Algeria to the next stage.
