Senegal U17 Open WAFU-A Campaign With Convincing Win Over Mauritania

Senegal’s U17 national team made a strong start to their WAFU-A U17 Championship campaign, defeating Mauritania 4–0 at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio on Monday.

The Young Lions, defending regional champions, took control early and went into the break with a two-goal advantage. Cheikh Oumar Sy opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Souleymane C. Faye doubled Senegal’s lead two minutes into the second half. Sy completed his brace in the 68th minute, while Amadou Ndiaye added a fourth in the 87th minute to seal a comfortable victory.

The tournament, being hosted by Senegal from September 7–20, serves as the WAFU-A qualifying competition for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal are drawn in Group A alongside Mauritania, Gambia and Sierra Leone, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.

The result gives the Young Lions an ideal start as they look to defend their regional crown and continue Senegal’s strong recent record at U17 level. Senegal are also the reigning African champions, having won the 2026 U17 AFCON in Morocco.
