Nigeria Advances To The Quarter Finals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup

The Nigeria u17 Women’s team otherwise known as the Flamengoes of Nigeria, confirmed her spot at the quarter finals of the FIFA u17 women’s world cup after a narrow 2-1 win over Mexico at the Mohammed IV football complex in Morocco.

Early on, Nigeria and Mexico both produced glimpses of promising opportunities to put their respective teams in front but a productive final third was lacking.

Finally, it was Nigeria who broke the deadlock through a Oluebube Umejiaku’s strike in the 40th minute to give the West Africans a well deserved lead just before the stroke of halftime.

In the final 45 minutes, The Flamengoes continued to dictate the tempo of play and had strings of chances to double Nigeria’s slender lead but the Mexican Goalkeeper was proactive enough to keep her team in the game.

Mary Dunstan came through in the 70th minute, took advantage of a rebounded effort in the eighteen and fired a blistering shot past the Mexican goalkeeper to double Nigeria’s lead.

The North Americans got a consolation through Emily Delgado at the death of added time to half the deficit but time ran out for an opportunity to turn the tide.

The 2023 bronze medal winners will now face Venezuela for a spot in the Semi finals as they seek to imitate their 2023 feat or even better the record.

Venezuela on the other hand handed Germany a shock 1-0 defeat in their Round of sixteen tie and will hope to ride on the momentum when they face Nigeria on Sunday.
