I had a Q & A with former KCCA player, Musa Ramathan. In the interview, he talks about his football journey and what he intends to do after professional football.
Who is Musa Ramatahan and where is he born?
My name is Musa Ramathan and I was born in Lira and it’s my home village where I stay.
To which schools did you attend?
From nursery to primary I did study from Lira then secondary for my Senior one I did join Sako SS in Luwero district, S.2 I did join Kankugulu Memorial school and then later joined Kibuli SS where I finished my high school from in 2018 when I did my UACE.
I didn’t join the University because at KCCA FC I was given an opportunity and promoted to the senior team, I got so much fixed with club engagements but I would love to join the University.
From where did you start playing football?
My football career started from Lira at a young age surprisingly as a ball boy. When I was in primary three it’s when I started playing school games. I did play in an academy in Lira called Lira Sports Academy where most of us were the likes of Allan Okello, Kirya Gerald now at Proline FC, Aliro Moses.
I did play a lot of tournaments of city tyre and Airtel rising stars and believe these tournaments exposed me so much. And my football development when I was at Kibuli SS here in Kampala.
When did you realize that you have a dream in playing football?
It’s a family thing because my dad was also footballer who played for Pamba FC back in the day so I had to follow his footsteps because we are four boys at home and all of us are footballers just that the rest are not in the top flight and our last born is at Kibuli SS but plays for the KCCA FC junior team.
So from my childhood I had a dream of playing professional football.
How do you describe your football journey?
My football journey has been blessed by Allah because it started from my home village, Lira and when I came to Kampala I joined KCCA which is a big club.
How many clubs have you played for and which clubs are those?
Bukedea town council which changed its name to Black Powers now when they were playing regionals and I was still in school then and KCCA FC.
Your one of the youngsters who have represented Uganda U20 at the AFCON and you reached the finals in 2021 in Mauritania, take us through how was the feeling?
The mood was so fine and unmatched feeling to us the players for reaching that far because I think it’s by the grace of God and it was a dream come true for me representing my country at the AFCON.
Have you ever been summoned on the senior national team?
Yes I have ever but that was before us playing the U20 AFCON because I had injuries but I am happy most of my teammates were summoned.
Who is your favorite player that attracted you to play the game of football?
Nemaja Vidic of Manchester United because my dad supported Manchester United so we would watch his games and I picked interest in the way Vidic played.
Why Nemaja Vidic?
I liked his leadership on pitch, his style of play and the character he had. Since he’s a defender and I am a defender too, I always looked up to him.
Which player do you admire most in your career?
I admire the current Express FC defender, Murushid Juuko. I like he’s calmness on the ball, communication on pitch and the resilience.
Who has been the toughest opponent you have faced in the UPL?
My toughest opponent was my teammate surprisingly and he’s called Simon Sserukuma and he was a threat to not only me but every opponent.
What has been your greatest achievement in your football journey so far?
My biggest achievement was playing the CAF Confederation Cup and then CAF Champions League with my former club, KCCA FC.
Going ahead to be the champions CECAFA Kagame cup with KCCA, this is so memorable because it was the first time playing with the senior team because when I traveled with the team I thought I was not going to play but unfortunately my coach, Mike Mutyaba entrusted me and a night prior to our second game, he called me to his room and said I will be playing the next game, to me I thought he was joking actually I didn’t sleep the whole night just thinking and imagining how I would play.
Representing my country at the U20 AFCON and we were 1st runners up is another great achievement in my life.
What has been your biggest disappointment in football?
The biggest blow I have faced in my career was the injury that almost led to a surgery I got from Ethiopia when we were playing For Uganda in the CECAFA U23
Musa of recent you made a move to MFK Vyskov in Czech Republic , how did that move happen?
I have been in KCCA FC for two years though I had signed a contract of four years but then a club in Czech Republic had an interest in me, so they had to approach the KCCA and had personal terms and the club accepted me to move on.
However the Czech Republic league is coming to an end so the club decided to loan me in MLS in America Cincinnati FC to be active so that when the league resumes, I am good to go.
For how long is your contract with the team?
It’s 3 years with an option of renewing it up to 2026.
What do you intend to do after your professional football?
I would love to be a football coach when I retire so that I can also groom someone to be a better football than me perhaps.
What advise would you give to someone who looks up to and would wish to play professional football?
You have to put God first in each and everything you do, working hard, believe in yourself so that you can achieve your set goals
Be patient, because when you are good things will come your way. Be so disciplined both on and off pitch.
