German Angola brush aside DR Congo with defensive masterclass in Dakar
DAKAR, Senegal — Angola opened their FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers Second Round campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo 100–68 at the Dakar Arena on Thursday. The reigning African champions took control early and never surrendered the advantage, leading 25–20 after the first quarter before exploding in the second to take a 51–30 lead into halftime. They eventually closed out the contest 100–68, improving their Group F record to 5–2, while DR Congo fell to 2–5.
Angola’s defense sets the tone
While Angola’s offense produced triple digits, it was their defense that ultimately defined the night.The Angolans suffocated DR Congo into repeated mistakes, registering 22 steals, a new African Qualifiers record according to FIBA. Eleven different Angolan players recorded at least one steal, with Cleusio Castro leading the defensive charge with five.
The defensive pressure translated directly into easy points. Angola scored 21 fast-break points off turnovers, compared with just two for DR Congo, while also winning the overall fast-break battle 27–17.”Defense won us the game,” Angola guard Childe Dundao said after the contest, underlining the mentality that powered the champions’ performance.
Gakou leads balanced Angolan attack
Angola did not rely on a single scorer to get the job done. Abou Gakou led the way with 18 points, while Gerson Goncalves added 13 points and five assists. Dundao also finished with 13 points, eight assists and two steals, orchestrating Angola’s offense while continuing to cause problems defensively. Angola’s depth was another major difference. Their bench contributed 41 points, compared with only 12 from the Congolese reserves. The reigning African champions also dominated inside, producing 52 points in the paint to DR Congo’s 30 and outrebounding their opponents 44–37.
Kamba keeps Congo DR fighting
DR Congo had three players reach double figures, led by Mathieu Kamba’s 18 points. Shekinah Munanga contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while Damion Baugh finished with 11 points, six assists and three rebounds. But Congo struggled to match Angola’s efficiency. They shot 42.6% from the field and 28.1% from three-point range, while Angola shot 47.5% overall and 30.6% from beyond the arc. The gap became particularly evident after halftime. Congo managed to win the third quarter 19–18, but Angola responded with a dominant 31–19 fourth quarter to turn a 20-point halftime advantage into a 32-point final margin.
Angola now turn their attention to Senegal
The victory gives Angola an important opening win in a highly competitive Group F, which also features Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Egypt. Following Thursday’s results, Angola sit at 5–2, behind unbeaten Côte d’Ivoire and level with Mali on 12 points. Senegal entered the window with a 5–1 record.
Angola will face Senegal at Dakar Arena on Saturday, setting up one of the biggest games of the window. The two sides have a long-standing rivalry, with Senegal holding a 5–4 advantage in their FIBA head-to-head history.
For Angola, Thursday’s victory was more than just another win. It was a statement from the African champions: the defense is already firing, the depth is evident, and the road to the 2027 World Cup has begun with authority.
