Under the Whistle: Vipers’ Battle Against Bias and Insecurity

2 min read

In a dramatic turn of events, Vipers SC finds itself embroiled in controversy following their quarterfinal exit from the Stanbic Uganda Cup, with allegations of unfair officiating and inadequate security stealing the spotlight.

It all unfolded at the Masindi Municipal Stadium where Vipers faced off against Kitara in a nail-biting encounter that ended in a 5-4 penalty shootout victory for Kitara. However, the drama didn’t end with the final whistle.

Referee Ali Sabilla Chelengat found himself at the center of Vipers’ ire, with accusations of biased officiating flying left and right. Vipers’ Chief Executive Officer, Simon Peter Njuba, penned a scathing letter to FUFA, detailing what they perceived as grave injustices on the field.

From allegedly invalid penalties to denied fouls, Vipers felt the sting of what they deemed unfair refereeing decisions.

But it wasn’t just the officiating that ruffled Vipers’ feathers. They also raised concerns about the lack of security at the stadium, citing incidents of harm inflicted upon their players and officials.

Denied entry, insulted, and manhandled, Vipers’ ordeal extends beyond the confines of the pitch.

Even their fans weren’t spared, as they were reportedly ejected from the VIP section despite having paid for entry.

The chaos escalated post-match, with Kitara’s supporters flooding the pitch and unleashing violence upon Vipers’ contingent, leaving only the match officials shielded from the onslaught.

With the wounds still fresh and threats looming over their upcoming Uganda Premier League fixture against Kitara, Vipers draw a line in the sand.

Unless FUFA intervens and addresses their grievances, they have vowed to boycott the impending showdown, refusing to step foot onto the pitch unless justice is served.

As the countdown to Friday’s clash at Masindi Municipal Stadium ticks away, the fate of the fixture hangs in the balance, caught in the crossfire of controversy and conflict.
