Joshua Cheptegei Foundation Launches Elgon Half Marathon

The Joshua Cheptegei Foundation has officially launched the Elgon Half Marathon, a highly anticipated event set to take place at the foot of Mt. Elgon. Scheduled for 2 November this year, the run aims to promote environmental conservation, combat climate change, and fight gender-based violence.

Kween Woman MP Emma Rose Cherukut praised Cheptegei’s global impact, stating, “Joshua has made Sebei, Uganda, and Africa proud, and I commend his efforts in addressing gender-based violence.

Youth Affairs Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi announced his support for the event and revealed he had requested the IGP to promote Cheptegei to Superintendent of Police, in recognition of his Olympic achievements.

“Mama Janet Museveni is following this event on UBC, I will be in Mbale for the Elgon Halg Marathon with my brother Joshua Cheptegei… I have also asked the IGP to promote him to SP because he has won the most important Olympic medal.” Youth Affairs minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi.

UNDP Uganda Resident Representative Nwanne Obahor also lauded Cheptegei’s commitment to his community, saying, “As he runs, he brings many with him, carrying the spirit of his people.”

Cheptegei emphasized the marathon’s broader purpose, urging action on environmental conservation and inclusivity.

“I want to emphasize that this marathon is more than just a feat of endurance, it is a call to action that we must conserve and protect our environment, preserve our natural heritage, and promote sustainable livelihoods.

“Gender-based violence undermines the progress that we strive for. Through this marathon we are promoting inclusivity, empowering women and girls, and fostering a culture of respect. Together we can make a difference.”

Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei is a Ugandan long-distance runner. He is the current world record holder for the 5000 metres and the 10,000 metres, and holds the world best time over the 15 kilometres distance.

Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation was formed with a purpose to transform communities into a strong, united and influential partners in development. Their main agenda is to use sports for community transformation taking note that Sebei Sub-region in Uganda is one of the communities that still grapples with challenges of gender-based violence, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, poverty, high levels of school dropouts, female genital mutilation, HIV/AIDS and now the effects of Corona Virus (COVID19).
