Messi leaves Barcelona after a new contract was not agreed on due to financial obstacles according to Barcelona.
FC Barcelona statement: “Despite Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles.”
He was expected to sign a new five year contract with a 50% reduction in his salary.
The 34-year old made his senior debut in 2003 scoring 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona.
