South African Footballer Luke Fleurs Fatally Shot in Car Hijacking Incident

South African footballer Luke Fleurs has been fatally shot in a car hijacking incident, according to reports from the Johannesburg suburb of Florida.

he 24-year-old defender, who played for Kaizer Chiefs, one of the country’s most revered football clubs, was attacked while waiting at a petrol station on Wednesday night. Unknown gunmen approached Fleurs, ordering him out of his vehicle before shooting him once in the upper body. One of the suspects reportedly fled the scene with Fleurs’ car following the shooting.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident, stating that the police are actively investigating the matter.

The news of Fleurs’ untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the football community. Kaizer Chiefs expressed profound sadness at the loss, describing it as “tragic.” The club assured that the police are handling the situation and promised to provide further updates as they become available.

South Africa’s Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa expressed deep sorrow over the incident, condemning the senseless act of violence that claimed Fleurs’ life.

Fleurs, known for his defensive prowess and technical abilities, joined Kaizer Chiefs last year after previously representing SuperSport United. He also had the honor of representing South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as part of the Under-23 national team.

While Fleurs had yet to make his debut for the senior national team, he was reportedly on the brink of doing so.

The Premier Soccer League announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all top-flight and second-tier games this weekend in memory of Fleurs, honoring his contributions to the sport and mourning his tragic passing.
