Gakdeng’s story is rooted in the resilience of her family. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, her parents fled the devastating civil war in Sudan in 1999 to seek a safer life in the United States. In 2011, her family relocated to Lanham, Maryland. Growing up in a diaspora household, her mother, Matilda Rial, ensured that the family remained deeply anchored to their South Sudanese heritage.

Gakdeng was raised on traditional customs, community functions, and foods like Mulah Kombo. This unique upbringing infused her with a profound sense of humility, a trait her coaches would later praise as her greatest superpower on and off the court.

She began turning heads during her high school career at Archbishop Carroll and New Hope Academy in the Washington, D.C. area, earning All-WCAC honors. Her unique combination of height, exceptional footwork, and a relentless work ethic caught the attention of major college scouts.

Domination in the College Ranks

Gakdeng first made waves on the NCAA stage at Boston College, breaking freshman records and anchoring the defense with her elite shot-blocking abilities. Seeking to test her limits, she transferred to the University of North Carolina (UNC) to play under coach Courtney Banghart.

At UNC, Gakdeng refined her game, morphing from a traditional shot-blocking center into a highly versatile, dominant force around the rim. She graduated from North Carolina in 2025 as one of the most respected interior defenders in college basketball, capturing the attention of the pro ranks.

Though she was raised in America, Gakdeng’s heart remained tied to South Sudan. In the summer of 2025, she made a defining decision: she traveled to Africa for the very first time to suit up for the South Sudan Women’s National Basketball Team, affectionately known as the Bright Starlets.

Her debut at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire was nothing short of legendary. South Sudan entered the tournament as wildcard debutants, but Gakdeng transformed them into giant-slayers. In a historic game against Egypt, she delivered a masterclass performance, shattering a decade long tournament record by grabbing a staggering 24 rebounds alongside 19 points.

Her interior dominance alongside captain Adut Bulgak propelled the Bright Starlets to a historic podium finish, capturing a bronze medal by overcoming basketball powerhouse Senegal. Gakdeng’s performance helped the national team skyrocket 15 spots in the FIBA world rankings, capturing global attention and uniting the “64 tribes in one heartbeat”.

The Professional Evolution

Following her college career, Gakdeng went unselected in the 2025 WNBA draft but was immediately invited to the Atlanta Dream training camp. Though waived before the regular season, she refused to let her professional aspirations stall.

She traveled across the Atlantic to sign her first professional contract with the top-tier Hungarian club KSC Szekszárd for the 2025–26 season, putting together a highly impressive rookie campaign.
