UPL Honor run-in: Vipers SC, KCCA FC and SC Villa – Who will win the UPL?

The race for the Uganda Premier League title is well and truly on. We are now in the final weeks of a thrilling 2022/23 Uganda Premier League campaign, and three teams are battling for the title.

The sides in question are Vipers SC, KCCA FC, and SC Villa. The three teams are level on 49 points.

Here rabsportsnews.com has a look at the battle for the Uganda Premier League gong as we race toward the end of the season.

Vipers SC
Vipers SC started the season slow having played a goalless draw with Bright Stars at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Venoms lost their second game of the season 1-0 to rivals KCCA FC. They later recovered with a comfortable 3-0 win over Maroons before falling back to a 1-1 draw with Wakiso Giants FC.

The Venoms have transformed since the arrival of Alex Isabirye, and he has guaranteed a likely chance of defending the championship and a chance to return to the CAF Champions League.

Vipers SC are currently on top of the table with 49 points but have a superior goal difference of 22 points. Second-placed KCCA FC have a goal difference of 16 points while third-placed SC Villa have a meager goal difference of 7.

This implies that Vipers SC shall be crowned champions if they win their last two games, even if KCCA FC and SC Villa equally win their remaining games.

However, a slip by the table leaders could see either KCCA FC or SC Villa win the title incase they pick maximum points in their remaining games, with the Kasasiro boys having a better opportunity due to the Jogoos goal difference of seven.

Vipers SC will travel to Jinja to face Bul FC in their next game on Tuesday 23 May before returning home to take on another Jinja side, Busoga United FC on Saturday 27 May.

KCCA FC
After a difficult start to life under Morley Byekawso, KCCA FC has maintained a stay in the top four and is in a great position to see it through to the last game. Byekwaso was replaced by club legend Jackson Mayanja who was suspended by FUFA after cases of indiscipline during KCCA FC’s 1-0 loss to Vipers SC at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.

The 1-0 win over Bul FC on Tuesday reignited the kasasiro boys’ hopes of clinching the title.

Six points in their last two games would see the Lugogo-based side keep tabs with league leaders Vipers and the other contender, SC Villa.

KCCA are second on the Uganda Premier League table with 49 points after 26 games. They have won 14 games, held 7 times, and lost 5 games. The team has a goal difference of 16.

KCCA FC will play Busoga United FC (away) and Bright Stars FC (at home) in their last two games.

SC Villa
It has been a season of mixed feelings for the Jogoos, as they slipped off from the top. Villa have been inconsistent throughout; however, they have been in superb form as the campaign comes to a close and have given themselves a brilliant chance to walk away with the gong.

Though not long ago, SC Villa looked favorites to top the league this season after a good run of wins despite FUFA suspensions and a change of the club venue to Lira.

This winning run would likely have continued all the way until the end of the season. But it may be too late for the Jogoos, who will need Vipers SC and KCCA FC to slip up to earn the trophy again.

SC Villa may have an advantage over the other two contending teams. The Jogoos will play Blacks Power FC and URA FC at home on Tuesday 23 May and Saturday 27 May respectively.

What are your predicted finishing for these three teams?
