Uganda’s Rugby Africa 7s title defence ends unsuccessfully
The reigning African champions Uganda bowed out of the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s 2023 tournament after losing to South Africa on Sunday.
The Rugby Cranes lost 26 – 14 to the South Africans. Despite the loss, the team put up a great performance to stun hosts Zimbabwe 24 – 12 in the 3/4th place playoff.
Uganda managed a 3rd place finish in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Good news is that Uganda has qualified for both the Olympic Games Repechage and the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, both to played in 2024.
Uganda was placed in Pool C alongside Algeria, Burkina Faso, and hosts Zimbabwe, arguably the toughest group in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Kenya defeated South Africa in the final to earn a direct ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris, 2024.
The Harare Sports Club have been the hosts of the tournament from Saturday, September 16 to Sunday, September 17.
