Annual TICAD Cup Launched at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru

The much-anticipated annual TICAD Cup football tournament was officially launched today at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, marking another milestone in the promotion of women’s football in Uganda. The event was graced by the Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Sasayama Takuya, alongside high-profile dignitaries and sports stakeholders.

Speaking at the launch, Ambassador Sasayama expressed his commitment to supporting the development of women’s football in Uganda and emphasized the importance of using sports to empower young women across the country.

“Football is a universal language that unites people and inspires dreams. I am proud to be part of this initiative that fosters both sports and gender equality,” he remarked.

  • UNHCR Country Representative Matthew Crentsil
  • Soltilo Bright Stars FC CEO Harold Atukwase
  • UN Women Country Representative Pauline Chiwangu
  • FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kizza

In his address, FUFA’s Decolas Kizza applauded the efforts of all stakeholders involved in promoting women’s football and stressed the federation’s commitment to developing the women’s game in Uganda. He mentioned that initiatives like this tournament align with FUFA’s vision of providing more opportunities for women to shine on the football pitch.

The tournament is supported by various international organizations including JICA, UNHCR, and UN Women, underlining the event’s broader goal of promoting gender equality through sport.

Pauline Chiwangu, UN Women’s Country Representative, spoke passionately about the role of football in breaking down barriers and empowering young women.

“Sport, and particularly football, has the power to inspire girls and women to take on leadership roles and challenge gender stereotypes. This tournament is more than just a competition; it’s a platform for positive change,” she said.
