Uganda Crested Cranes have won the 2022 edition of CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship after a dominant display against Burundi in the finals on Saturday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
The hosts defeated their counterparts 3-1 to win the championship. Sandra Nabweteme and Fazila Ikwaput were the heroes for the Crested Cranes, while midfielder Joelle Bukuru scored the consolation for Burundi.
Uganda took an early lead when Nabweteme beat goalkeeper Alissa Imarukundo to put the Crested Cranes in the driving seat.
Ikwaput doubled Uganda’s advantage two minutes to half time after the sharp forward dribbled past defender Diane Irankunda and goalie Alissa to slot home in an empty net.
Burundi came back stronger in the second-half. The visitors pulled a goal back through Joelle Bukuru in the 49th minute.
The Crested Cranes were able to hold on to the lead for 90 minutes. Nabweteme once again stepped up at stoppage time to put the game to bed.
Ethiopia finish third
Ethiopia finished in third place after overcoming a resilient Tanzania 2-1 in the third place final.
Turist Lema and Tadesse Bizuayehu were the goal scorers for Ethiopia while top scorer Opa Clement (7 goals) scored the consolation for Tanzania.
