Lady Doves become first team to lift the FUFA Women Super league trophy

2 min read

Lady Doves have registered their first ever FUFA Women Super league title after edging out UCU Lady Cardinals 2-1 in the finals at Njeru today.

Elizabeth Nakigozi gave the Masindi based side an early lead after scoring from a free kick in the 27th minute.

The team which started the game without their star player Fazila Ikwaput put a good display but this was not enough as the Lady Cardinals managed to secure an equaliser in the 75th minute through Sandra Kisakye’s well calculated header.

However, Lady Doves needed this win to make up for their 2-0 loss to UCU Lady Cardinals in the 2019 FUFA Women Elite League final.

Despite her injury, Fazila Ikwaput came off the bench in the 78th minute replacing Joweria Nagadya to score the most important goal for her team.

The exceptional player had 8 minutes play time which was enough for her to put the ball past UCU goal keeper Ruth Aturo hence giving her team the much needed victory.

Immediately after her goal Fazila was stretched off the pitch.

Ikwaput leaves this tournament as top scorer with 8 goals to her name, crowned Most Valuable player (MVP) and awarded 2 million Uganda shillings.

The team was awarded 12 million Uganda shillings and are set to represent Uganda in the maiden CAF Women’s champions league qualifiers that will take place in Kenya in July 2021.

UCU Lady Cardinals being first runners up received the silver medal accompanied by 7 million Uganda shillings.

In the earlier match of the day, Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga edged out Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC 2-1 to secure third place and was awarded a bronze medal plus 5 million Uganda shillings.
