The last dance of the midfield general: Is Tony Mawejje set to retire from club football?

Tony Mawejje, commonly known as ‘the midfield general’, by cranes fans has had an illustrious playing career admirable by both his teammates and fans.
   
Originally from Masaka, Mawejje announced his retirement from the national team in 2017 after steering Uganda to first Africa Cup of Nations final in Gabon.

The midfield general has enjoyed more success at national team compared to club level. He has played for numerous clubs with nothing much to show off for.

The former Tirana midfielder is showing signs that he may finally be throwing up his boots after years of moving from one club to another.

In one of their games, the Police Fc captain wore a shirt underneath his jersey that read, ‘the last dance of the midfield general’. This commenced debate whether the former cranes midfielder is bound for retirement from club football.

Career
Mawejje previously signed a two-year contract with the Norwegian Tippeligaen club Haugesund ahead of the 2014 season. In July 2014, after only three appearances for Haugesund, Mawejje moved to Valur on loan. On 27 January 2015, Mawejje became a free agent.

In July Mawejje joined Tirana in Albania and made his debut on 6 September 2017 in a win against FK Kukësi where he played the entire match. Tony scored his first goal for Tirana on 16 September 2017 against KS Iliria; Tiranawon 1-0. While there, he helped the club win the Albanian Super cup in 2017,and promotion to the 2018/19 Albanian Superliga.

Tonny scored his last goal for the national team in a crucial away win at Comoros during the AFCON qualifiers in 2016.

Uganda Premier League side Police Football Club completed the signing of the former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tony Mawejje in July 2020.

Mawejje, who featured for the Cops between 2006 and 2007 returned to the club and agreed on terms to a two-year contract.

The combative midfielder had been without a club since 2019 after agreeing to mutually
terminate his previous contract with Kuwait top division side Al Arabi SC.

Since he began his football career, he has played for Masaka L.C Fc, KCC Fc, Police Jinja, URA SC, IBV Vestmannaeyjar(Iceland), Golden Arrows(South Africa), Haugesund(Norway), Value, Prottur, Tiranna, Al Rhabi and Police Fc where he currently plays his trade.

Since he made his debut in 2004, Mawejje gunnered 68 caps and scored 8 goals for the Uganda cranes.
