The Gazelles withstood a late Egypt resurgence to win their first game in the ongoing Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers.

Thursday – A strong and emphatic performance from the women’s national basketball team, the gazelles, in their second match saw them edge Egypt 86-85 in a nervy and closely fought contest at the MTN Arena Lugogo on Wednesday evening.

Heading into the into this game, Uganda had to win if they were to continue their stay at the continental tournament as they had lost the first game to Kenya 61-53.

And so the occasion was set after the Uganda national anthem reverberated the entire MTN Arena, beads of sweat trickling down Jannon Otto and fellow compatriots who were all expected to put in a mighty shift in the must win encounter in order to keep their qualification dreams alive.

The gazelles will take on South Sudan who defeated Rwanda 54-40 on the second day. This will be a real test for the hosts who will be aiming to make their third appearance at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The Gazelles have made two appearances in the tournament having appeared in 1997 and in 2015.
