CAF Super Cup – RS Berkane Clinch First Title After Edging Wydad
RS Berkane were crowned 2022 CAF Super Cup champions for the first time after stunning favorites Wydad Athletic Club 2-0 on Saturday evening.
Wydad were close to opening the deadlock in the 23rd minute after Mamadou Camara’s classic header at the top corner was superbly kept out by goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti.
Berkene later found a way to beat the custodian as Charki El Bahri headed home Hamza El Moussaoui’s cross past Tagnaouti.
Wydad were the better side earlier in the second stanza as they created a couple of chances but were not clinical in front of goal. Berkane later found their way into the game as they were awarded a penalty after Amine Aboulfath brought down Chadrack Kukombe in the box, with Sofian El Moudane dispatching the spot-kick.
Wydad were handed a lifeline after the latter were awarded a penalty for a trip by El Moussaoui in the box in the last quarter-hour mark. However, VAR over-ruled the decision.
There was another penalty call in the last minute of the game for Berkane after Ismail Moutaraji fouled Brahim El Bahraoui in the box. VAR once again reversed the decision, but the game was already done and dusted.
Wydad were playing their fourth Super Cup final as they equaled the record held by Raja Casablanca for a Moroccan club after winning the CAF Champions League while Berkane qualified after beating Orlando Pirates in the CAF Confederation Cup final.
